Shortness of Breath

There are moments that I force myself to stop and look back at what God has done, things that I see as bench marks, or in Biblical times we might have called them altars...One of those moments for me was the amazing 6 weeks we spent in Profile//PC. Truth is there are defining moments in the history of movements...in the Civil Rights movement it was the 'I have a dream speech.' For the American Revolutionary war it was the 'Ride of Paul Revere' and the list goes on.

Last night I had a chance to catch up on the amazing 30 for 30 series on ESPN. The series is dedicated to highlighting overlooked yet pivotal occurrences in sports history from different perspectives and in a very creative docudrama. The episode "The Band that Wouldn't Die' was a snapshot of the lives of the Baltimore (now Indianapolis) Colts marching band who was left behind in 1984 when the team overnight moved to Indy. The story itself is quite sad and heart wrenching with a tinge of redemption the day the Ravens came to town and the band that was left behind for nearly 20 years took the field ahead of the Ravens, proud as the had ever been. When they interviewed the team there was nothing but sadness and regret in the hearts of people who lost their team...then I started thinking...(which is always a dangerous thing)

My thought 'If these people will go on national television and weep over a football team that bailed on them 25 years ago, do they really have anything to live for?' And while that sounds judgmental and harsh its totally not my heart. My heart is this, if this band is willing to remain committed to a cause, community, and belief that they have a purpose to be a band, and someday they're gonna prove it, how much more should we as believers be committed to a movement, cause, and community that is founded on the person, power and promise of our HUGE God?

In some regards I know that I undersold what I personally felt about the moments spent in Profile//PC. Radical honesty would require me to tell you that most leaders have an innate fear, one I am not immune to, of people not following if we take things 'Too Far.' If we push the limits of their comfort zone most leaders, if we are honest, are fearful that we will just be labeled uncool and religious weirdos, or seminary sell outs. Either way I gave into that fear, not intentionally, and to be honest I wasn't even aware that I had done this until this week.

Some of you know my passion, some of you think that I have moments that I am moved, but this week someone very close to me shared some insightful thoughts. Their insight 'Pastor, I know your passion, I feel it, but those who sit on Wed dont have the luxury of hearing your heart everyday like I do...make sure they know what I know, that you are committed to seeing this Gen passionate about Jesus, radical grace, radical honesty, and leaving nothing to regret.'

From day one I promised PURE transparency...so first let me ask your forgiveness for not showing you how passionate I am about what happened during Profile//PC. For a moment we pushed the envelope of doing what Jesus called us to...being passionately moved by the Holy Spirit about prayer, worship, the word, tithing, and service.

My only purpose in sharing this...our face will be redefined by passionate worship unlike we have known, passionate exploration of Gods will for us through the word, and passionate community that moves us to radical prayer, tithing, and service.

James 4:14 is a compelling reminder that we only have 5 seconds in the spectrum of eternity on this ball of dirt...what are you gonna do with it? Let your breath be shortened by the reality of our brief existence here and the implications of eternity...let leave nothing to regret...

See ya tonight...take a risk everyday, start by invite someone who needs Hope, come ready to change our Generation...

Three things from a leader whos failed at all of them

Over that last few weeks of the 'One' series i have shared several times that while i know our Generation is called to be Passionate World Changers i refuse to go alone...last night i was talking with someone from the PURE staff, someone with huge ministry experience and loads of passion for ministry and seeing hearts changed for Jesus and it brought me back to a reality that i have been wrestling with for sometime now. My responsibility to share things, even if they're not fun to share...

Three things from a leader whos failed at all of them :-)

1) Going alone will often create the opportunity for someone to make it to the top fast, but someone who takes friends with them is able to stay...going alone never creates the opportunity for longevity...why? Simple because its not about you...Jesus, God, and Holy Spirit are about themselves reaching other people, and wont leave you there to gloat...

2) God always asks more of us than we are initially willing to give...forcing a dependency on Him.

Francis Chan says so bluntly what many of us dance around regularly."The truth is that the Spirit of the living God is guaranteed to ask you to do something you wouldn't normally want or choose to do."

3) Building trust with people who follow you means more than being or looking like the person you think they want you to be...it means caring for people when no one else is looking, especially caring for those that no one else cares about...and trust requires full transparency.

"People obsessed with Jesus choose to love the unlovable, no matter what the cost, and loving people who may never be able give you anything in return may be the hardest thing in the world to do." -Francis Chan

I said that my conversation last night made me revisit my need to speak even when things are unpopular to hear...truth is I think most of us love the ideas and truths held in the three points above, but are we willing to make them reality...are we really willing to live them out?

In the gut of our person are we willing to join community groups, commit to reading our bibles, praying and spending time with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit everyday...are we willing to commit our lives to not being about ourselves to giving them away to others who may never give a thing back...to sharing the HOPE of Jesus to a stranger once a week, or taking a risk to fill the chair next to you at PURE tomorrow night by inviting someone...the unfun part of it all is that most of us really arent willing to do that...We all crave to be passionate, weather we think that its cheesy to be passionate about Christ and community or not, secretly we all long to be Passionate Christians...the PC life isnt one easily sustained...it takes risk, and it takes trust...Best part...the God of all creation, a God who is passionate about you is the one that we get to trust...

When we talk about living//pc there is one quote my dad shared with me as a kid that never escapes me...

"Everyone wants to win, but few have the will to prepare to win." -John Wooden

Question of the day...do we each have passion enough to daily make this life about Him and His business and not ours...that requires action...whats your first step?

See ya tomorrow...

Passionate Christians, Friends in World Change, One Movement

When we talk about living//PC what we are really saying is that we are choosing to find life change everyday by reaching out to others and sharing the life change that Jesus has done in us. Wed we premiered the PURE_2nd Chance movement. People with powerful stories of transformation and huge life change through the HOPE Jesus and the help of community...so powerful...cant wait to share the rest of the stories in the coming weeks!

Yesterday i had a day full of time spent with people who are committed to this movement...Here at PURE, planning for ways to make a bigger impact through life change...World Changers for sure...and the best part, they are all believing for life change to take place not just at PURE but also praying, believing and dreaming of ways to work with other ministries that are living for huge life change. Its a blessing to have people like Danny Sinner, Jason Prod, Leslie Hurlbert, Brandon Merklebach, and Mark Abate to partner with...what an amazing group of people to spend a day with!!

With all my heart I beleive that the only way for us to succeed in changing this generation is to do it together...that was Jesus plan not mine, Tony Wood's or any other NxtGen leader...It really is my heart to not go alone...I wont! Jesus is calling us into community...intimate relationship with one another to live out the reality of Hope, 2nd chances, radical grace, and world change.

Pray for PURE, h2O (Pastor David Abirl), and Surf but first pray for some of the other NxtGen ministries living out world change...find them on twitter, Facebook, where ever and follow them, and pray for more World change for Jesus through them!! here's some of their sites:

Generate- Tony Wood (lead Generate Pastor//Crossroads Christian Church), Ronny Roa (Jr high Pastor), and Cody Padronos (High School Pastor)

The Rising- Josh Husmann (Young Adult Pastor//Pomona 1st Baptist)

Phase 2- Eddie Tores (Young Adults//Abundant Living)

We are not in this alone...never were, never have been, never will be!!

PURE_Street Teams, ONE series, we need your help, and other fun stuff

So much response from so many of you last night...I love it...My phone didnt stop till 1 am!! What an amazing thing to think that people in our Gen are actually buying off that we can and should live out the Scriptures they way that they are written...in an authentic way that embodies the self evident truth of each and every page...

ok enough with the emotional stuff, even though it is the highlight of my week when i see you guys respond, and on to more meaningful things...like Miley Cyrus being voted the worst Celeb Influence of 2009...I am totally not ok with that...Some of you know my good friend Pastor Tony Wood @ Generate...We have this strange mutual affection for miss 'Hannah Montana.' See Tony's thoughts here I will deal with the ridicule later, just read the article...

On that note...come hang out with us at Trunk or Treat on Sat from 5:30 pm - 9:30pm and help some of the 10k people that will be here on campus have a safe Halloween...and yes you can dress up..,.

Last i am headin out the door to go hang with some awesome people who are going to invade Victoria Gardens @ 6:30 pm tonight...we will be done before 'The Office' and you can Tivo 'Community' get over here and hang out with us...Sbux inside VG...come hangout!!! and have a PC moment with your PURE community...
